My grandma used to have a cat for many years, and he was just a silly and inoffensive fluff
They're very nice cats
The reason I haven't got one yet is because I still live with my parents and they're terrified of snakes. Also, recently we got cats, and even though the snake would live in it's enclosure, I wouldn't want to risk having cats and snakes living in the same house 
I confess that I think about doing the same-
And I don't think they can harm you... Unless you harm them too. Ah, and let's not forget that they can copy the human voice, and this indeed IS scary
